Hey guys, as if my wardrobe didn’t already have a million contrasting styles and vibes going on. I’ve recently welcomed a new style in my life. Something peak teenage emo me never thought I’d be saying, period dressing. Whether this is solely inspired by my obsession with Greta Gerwig’s Little Women or the rise of ‘Cottage Core’ that’s taking over my Tiktok feed. I’m sure you know how much I adored the new Little Women film. It’s been 5 months since I saw it in the cinema and I’m stile thinking about it (review here)
I thought I’d show you three outfits I am obsessed with right now that are very different from my normal style. A few ways to feel like you are skipping around a field with Laurie in Little Women.
This first look is the most ‘Little Woman’ style. This is something I’d never normally wear. It’s from the Laura Ashley and Urban Outfitters collaboration (other dress from the range). Laura Ashley is a brand whos archives perfectly sum up this whole aesthetic. I’m a huge fan of this collaboration to take the beautiful prints and fabrics but styled in a slightly cooler way from Urban Outfitters. This dress which unfortunately you can’t see in full because lockdown self-shooting skills haven’t developed that far yet. But it’s a beautiful length very frilly – the best part is the skirt has pockets. The most Laurie thing about it is the cuffs and the beautiful collar with a necktie (god these photos do not do it justice). I love how this brings elements of Laurie’s style from the film mixed with a dusty pink floral print, its just beautiful.
Next up is the ultimate Little house on the prairie dress with all the layers you’d expect. Again this is not my usual style, normally I would not have been drawn to have anything like this. Last year I was living my best life at the 90% off sale at Marks & Spencer. Which is the one time I go a bit crazy with things out of my comfort zone if it’s in my size, M&S quality with 90% off its hard to resist? This was under £3, you can’t get a dress like this for £15 even in Primark these days so it’s a massive win. Plus this dress also has pockets, I’ve never seen so many dresses with pockets in, its like a dream.
I knew that with the right accessories I wouldn’t feel like an extra on Lark Rise to Candleford. I usually avoid tan accessories and as I wanted to contrast so its not too period drama I stuck with a black belt and boots.
The third and final outfit would not be seen in any costume drama. Yet there is still a subtle nod to that aesthetic. This top is another Urban Outfitters treat, a mesh crop top in a beautiful toile print that I just can’t get enough of. For as long as I can remember I’ve been drawn to everything in a china willow style print. This is a perfect blend of two styles with such an old-style print on a mesh crop top. It fits in a lot more with my normal wardrobe while still subtly nodding to my new found love for period dressing.
