The ultimate 90s dress – Femme Luxe*

October 6, 2019

Hey guys,

The 90s is something I have a love-hate relationship with. I don’t get as excited about 90s throwback things as some of my peers. When the 90s ended, I was only three and even well into the 90s I was behind with most things pop culture. Therefore there isn’t much from the 90s I remember.

femme luxe, glitter dress,

I was brought up mainly on whatever my parents were interested in so, a lot of the 70s and 80s music.
There are some parts of 90s culture I do love and still grew up with Friends and Sex and the city I’m looking at you.
Musically there was the grunge era I love the likes of Nirvana to No Doubt. However, I feel like (a very unpopular opinion) that a lot of 90s hype is only so loved because of personal nostalgia around it. Don’t get me wrong I love a bit of Boyzone or Take That at Karaoke who doesn’t, but it’s not my jam.
As with every decade, there are some iconic moments of pop culture and some that are cringe to look back on.

When it comes to fashion for my style, I feel like the 90s falls flat compared to the boldness of its predecessors, yet there are still some gems that I find myself nodding to the 90s a lot.
The key things from the 90s for me were to do with the grunge scene — oversized plaid shirts which are a staple but not that fun. Think young Winona Ryder
The 90s is fabulous for night outs. Mainly looking at Gwen Stefani, I love so many of her looks from the 90s. She was very creative with her hair and makeup. All the colour eye-liner and space busy, which is my favourite look for something quick but fun on a night out.
Another trend that came from the 90s is the spaghetti strap which I find so flattering.

This look without being a fancy dress look for the 90s night at your student’s union, I think subtly nods to the best of 90s style so well. I added the child-like checker with a dolphin and my trusty air maxes for even more childhood nostalgia to 90s this fabulous dress up.
As I always try to make all outfits as comfy as possible, the fit and stretchy material of this dress paired with trainers were so comfy for a night of dancing, but a holographic glitter dress made me feel fabulous, so it was a win-win.

What’s your favourite thing to come out of the 90s? Or on the other hand, what 90s trend makes you cringe?
