Sending presents to people is just my favourite thing and I think if you can afford to at the moment it’s so important so here are so of my suggestions to show a friend you are thinking of them at the moment. What is not to love about supporting small business in these struggling times while also sending a loved one a pick me up a treat to show them you miss them.
Flowers are a safe go-to to cheer someone up. If you don’t know exactly what they might want, someone who isn’t overly into ‘stuff’ or clutter as such flowers are perfect. Peony season is nearing an end but that would be my top recommendation. Moonpig and Bloom & Wild are my favourites – Bloom & Wild include a personalised notecard and both have a selection over letterbox flowers so there is less packaging. Who doesn’t love a drink? Whether your furloughed or working from home it’s a lot easier to just have a gin and tonic on a weekday now. One of the many student traits that have stuck with me is only buying the cheapest booze possible so buying good quality drinks as a present it’s perfect. Whether it’s our beloved Dead Man’s fingers Cornish rum or Tarquins gin. Or the best of both worlds as Tarquins distillery has ventured into the world of rum with Twin Fin, ‘A rum for the beach’ which I am so excited to try. Tarquins have adapted their online shop so well for lockdown, all bottles come with a tonic. I’ve got a number of lockdown birthdays coming up this month and Tarquins is the top of my present list.
Perfect for a good friend, there are so many affordable jewellery brands around now it’s the perfect present. I’ve got so many favourite jewellery brands I am obsessed with at the moment but saving that for a more detailed jewellery post. If you follow me on social media you may have seen I had a lockdown birthday in May and my friend Charlotte got the perfect lockdown present, a hug ring from Bumble and Bee. Charlotte was away in Australia for six months before lockdown so we haven’t seen each other since September, a silver band that represents a hug is the perfect lockdown present to tell someone you can’t wait to hug them again. Traditionally jewellery is sentimental romantically but this ring has sentimental meaning from a friendship which we need more off.
If you are lucky enough to be based in Cornwall too I have so many suggestions for freshly made goodies for yourself or a surprise gift in lockdown. It’s obviously been really hard for restaurants and small food businesses over the last few months, more and more of our favourites are now opening for delivery which I am loving. Present wise I’d recommend sending someone a box of beautiful cakes from Lawerence’s in Truro. Sometimes a more practical present can go down just as well, baker toms bakery is delivering bread boxes across the county so why not send a friend lots of freshly baked sourdough, what a treat. Takeout wise not many are delivering directly to my area – if you are lucky enough to live in Falmouth The meat counter is now back open for burger needs, or restaurant Mine for Sunday roasts. What we have been obsessed with is ‘The Cornish Italian Meal deal’ for £8 the guys from Tirmiasugo delivery homemade pasta dishes (ravioli to gnocchi) with a side of breadsticks and a Tiramisu dessert – they can be eaten straight away or kept for two days and reheated. They deliver across the whole county so I recommend it highly for some good value, restaurant-quality fuss-free dinners or put in a friends address and surprise them with a night off cooking.
Both Etsy and Not on the high street are full of perfect little gifts from indie sellers. At the start of lockdown, I sent my friend a ‘Thinking of you’ flower in a matchbox, it’s a little bit silly but a lovely little surprise.
