Podcasts, especially career podcasts are slowly becoming one of my favourite forms of entertainment but also to learn. I barely watch any YouTubers anymore, and I find myself listening to Podcasts over music on my commute now.
I find podcasts such a fresh way to listen to peoples ideas and learn.
The world of podcasts is so big you can find podcasts on pretty much any topic, but my favourite topic is career podcasts covering careers, marketing and business.
The best kind of podcasts are around women supporting women, mainly around motivational stories, learning from experiences and conversations I can learn from while still being entertained.
I love discovering new podcasts, but there are quite a few that I come back to time and time again, wait each week for the episode to be released so I thought I’d share with you my favourites of all time.
I’m splitting this list up into two blog posts. Part one focusing on Career-related podcasts this is everything from career interviews to marketing and stem industry news etc. and next weeks which will cover all the other podcasts I love.
This is an old favourite that I mention time and time again. Emma Gannon is one of my favourite career ladies, and I love everything she stands for. Emma is passionate about being creative, enjoying your job and side hustles. In her podcast series, she interviews people from writers to startup owners who have multiple strings to their business and the chat in a relaxed manner about their careers, inspirations, juggling a work-life balance and juggling more than one aspect of the job. Some of the guests include Gillian Anderson and Elizabeth Gilbert.
This is a new favourite for me. As some of you may know I did fashion marketing at university, work in marketing but currently work in marketing for an engineering company so within the last year at this role I have had to learn about a whole world that I used to ignore, science. Through my job, I have become more invested in STEM (Science, technology, engineering and maths). Admittedly still struggling actually understanding the science, but I am becoming more interested in the industry, technology developments and of course linking this with my feminist bone – diversity in STEM. Therefore Women tech charge has been my entry-level insight into all this. Hosted by Dr.Anne-Marie …. for the evening standard similar to the first podcast I mentioned she interviews a variety of women within the world of STEM about their careers its super interesting to hear from Rocket scientists to women linking technology and beauty together. Even though I will never be involved in STEM other than marketing the stories are inspiring and a bridge between science and creative arts.
This is another new favourite, similar again to Ctrl-alt-delete this podcast focuses around the idea of making your career fit you. The hosts Sarah and Helen cover a wide range of career struggles such as should you become a specialist or get a broad overview, do soft or hard skills matter more. Again it’s from a slight angle of marketing, freelance and creative business world but I think it can be enjoyable no matter your line of work. This podcast helps me reflect on my actions at work more, which is excellent and gets you thinking.
Work like a woman is a podcast that goes alongside my favourite career book by the same title — hosted by Mary Portas, which is a retail legend here in the UK. She interviews key business players following the themes from the book. Work like a woman itself focuses on the different working skills of men and women traditionally. how all businesses would be better if they were adapting traditionally female attributes, the importance of better childcare, kindness and flexibility in the workplace for example and how they can befit profits, not just the staff. I loved hearing these ideas from the book come to life through debate and interviews. One of the most interesting was with the CEO of Greggs.
I am sure I’ve mentioned the Freelance fix before on here. Its hosted by the lovely Anna from The Cornish life and as the name suggest it focuses on life as a freelancer. Anna’s episodes are short snappy and full of tips for creatives, business owners, marketers and more. Covering a range of topics from work-life balance, managing your finances as a freelancer and more. Even though I am not a freelancer I find some of the conversations so insightful, especially the interviews because I think loving career interviews is a clear pattern in this list.
Social minds is the super geeky digital marketing edition to this list, apologies now. This is a podcast by Social Chain, who is one of the strongest social media agencies today and are leading the way in this sector. So a podcast full of up to date industry news and tips from then is going to be worth listening to. Once a month there is an episode titled Breaking Social which is all about the new updates, launches and things that happened that month, which is really great to learn from.
